Floyd Newman (* 17th August 1931 as Floyd Sidney Newman III in Tennessee ) is an American saxophonist .

Career

Newman grew up as the son of musical parents; his father played the saxophone and violin , his mother the piano . During his school days he played the piano, after graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, he switched to the saxophone, which he received a scholarship . His father bought a baritone saxophone built in 1918 for him in 1949 for US $ 200 in a pawn shop , which Newman accompanied throughout his musical career. He then studied dentistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine BluffHowever, his training suffered greatly from his nightly performances as a musician. During his studies he was drafted into the United States Army . He was stationed in Fort Benning , Georgia , and was part of the military orchestra . After the end of his military service, he did not resume his studies and devoted himself to his music career.

BB King hired Newman for his first band, the BB King Review . Newman later led the house band at the Plantation Inn nightclub in West Memphis. There he discovered the young Isaac Hayes , who later came to Stax through him. Newman was also at times a member of the Mar Keys and the Memphis Horns . For many years he worked as a studio musician at Stax Records and during this time he played on albums by Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, among others . He then worked for Atlantic Records , where he could be heard on recordings by Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin, among others .

In 2018 he handed over his then 100-year-old saxophone to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music , the only instrument he had ever played as a professional musician. At the same time he ended his music career and retired into private life.
