Escape from the Earth (Original title: Evacuate Earth ) is a documentary with fictional elements from the National Geographic Channel from 2012 .

Plot overview

In an unspecified future, a huge hail of meteorites will fall on earth . Astronomers are investigating the matter and are horrified to discover that the meteorites are only the harbingers of a much greater catastrophe: a neutron star is approaching the earth and will completely destroy it in 75 years. To ensure the survival of mankind, scientists are proposing to build a gigantic spaceship that will then bring a group of chosen people to the next habitable planet. The world's governments support the plan. After some technical difficulties, the giant spaceship is actually completed and successfully launched. Shortly afterwards the neutron star reaches the earth, and this is torn apart by its gravitational pull. The “Noah's Ark” spaceship reached a habitable planet 88 years later. The future of humanity is secure.

During the film, numerous scientists and technicians have their say and discuss the scenario described in the documentary.

action

The film describes a thought experiment: A neutron star approaches the earth. Constant meteor storms are the first warning sign and dramatic sequences show widespread destruction and deaths of thousands of people. According to calculations, there is a maximum of seventy-five years left to radically prepare human society for the evacuation of the earth. The propulsion system for the spacecraft is the first problem to be addressed. In a dramatic sequence, the world's leading experts discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various methods. Traditional rockets are too slow and antimatter engines are too unstable. You end up opting for the impulse drive as originally suggested by Project Orion . The world's engineers, scientists, and workers have started their work in a new location called Starship City . Interviewed experts warn that fatalism can drive some people to either suicide or radicalism and try to sabotage the project. In a dramatic sequence, terrorists threaten the facility, but are prevented from doing so by a hidden minefield. But conflicts also escalate as security forces focus either on maintaining order or protecting the facilities and personnel of the interstellar project.

Another important issue then is which people should be evacuated. While diversity is respected, each selected individual would need to be genetically robust and not predisposed to disease (such as schizophrenia and diabetes). In one sequence, a second arch ship is announced amid controversy as it is reserved for the richest and most powerful families in the world who are willing to pay for the passage. Simulated news broadcasts announce delays and setbacks in luring scientists to the private arch ship. When the neutron star enters our solar system, Saturn is destroyed, and the earth experiences catastrophic shifts and radiation bursts in its seasons, causing death and ecological damage. The private arch ship equipped with an antimatter engine explodes because its antimatter containment fails. Whole families may break apart as they prepare to board the remaining arch ship, and experts discuss the basic necessities for human life: bacteria, air, water, and food. Bacteria are easily stored and air is synthesized from water. However, food is a problem because it must be completely self-sufficient on the ship. Insects seem to be the means of choice because highly developed animals would be too intensive to keep and would need their own reserves of food, water and oxygen.

The arch ship is now finished and starts. A few days later, the neutron star is so close to Earth that the tidal force begins to deform the Earth's core and crust, causing massive earthquakes and volcanism. Next, the gravity of the neutron star tears off the surface, causing the crust to crack and the hot interior of the earth to leak into the vacuum of space and destroy the earth. Only the colonists on the ark can witness this event - the rest of humanity has already been wiped out. The colonists continue their journey to the Barnard Star , which has been chosen as their destination. Experts discuss the potential for mutiny and fractionation and ultimately reject them as unlikely, as strong family and social ties are emphasized. The journey is estimated to be eighty-eight years, and only the youngest of the original crew will survive to see the new planet, which may be home to other life forms. Experts conclude that the scenario, while unlikely, is possible and needs to be prepared by world governments.

background

The film was first broadcast in Germany as a two-parter on August 5, 2013 on N24 .

criticism

Critics of these documentaries see the film as a kind of preparation of the people for their annihilation, in order to “swear them to the 'common' task and it is thus affirmed for over two hours that the earth would be destroyed and there is no other way out.” A destruction which is ascribed to an external source, although "in reality the earth is being purposefully destroyed by the capitalist, monotheistic class [...]".
