The Bangor International Airport is the airport of the city of Bangor in the US state of Maine .

Location and transport links

Bangor International Airport is four kilometers west of downtown Bangor . Interstate 95 runs east of the airport, Interstate 395 south- east and US Highway 2 south . The airport is not involved in local public transport .

history

Regular air traffic at the airfield, which opened as Godfrey Field in 1927 , began in 1931. Boston-Maine Airways , an airline founded by the Boston and Maine Railroad and Bangor and Aroostook Railroad , established a connection between Bangor and Boston, with a stopover in Portland . From 1937 the airfield had lighting and could also handle night flights .

Before the United States entered the Second World War , the airfield was transferred to the United States Army Air Corps as Bangor Army Air Field and used for military flights to Europe. In 1942 the name was changed to Dow Army Airfield and in 1947, after the establishment of the United States Air Force , to Dow Air Force Base . The current runway was built in 1958 in order to be able to use the airport for the Boeing B-52 bomber and was at that time the longest runway east of the Mississippi . In parallel to military use, Northeast Airlines ran scheduled flights to Boston and New York in the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1968, Dow Air Force Base was closed and reopened as Bangor International Airport the following year by the City of Bangor. In the 1970s and 1980s, the airport was primarily used as a stopover on connections between the American west coast and destinations in Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean - while the aircraft was being refueled, passengers could pass through immigration and customs control. Also, Condor Flugdienst and LTU used at this time the Bangor airport.

During the Gulf War , the Iraq War and the SFOR mission , more than half a million soldiers returned to the USA via Bangor Airport.

From 2005 the airport was one of the emergency landing sites for the space shuttle .

business

Bangor International Airport has scheduled flights to destinations within the United States. Since Bangor Airport is the first US airport accessible for flights from Europe, flights are often diverted to Bangor Airport in the event of suspected terrorism, medical emergencies, bad weather, technical incidents or problems with drunk passengers. For this reason, Bangor is also served as a refueling stop on delivery flights from short and medium-haul aircraft from Europe.
