The Ercan Airport ( IATA code ECN , ICAO code LCEN ) is an airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .

Geographical location

The airport is about ten kilometers east of North Nicosia .

history

The airport was the first airfield in Nicosia and was built during the time of British rule. It is named after the pilot Fehmi Ercan, who fell during the Turkish invasion in 1974 .

In February 2015, the construction of another terminal was announced. It is expected to have a capacity of around five million passengers a year, cost 220 million euros and be completed by 2019.

The Turkish construction company Taşyapı İnşaat will build the terminal.

Destinations

Ercan Airport is currently served by the airlines AnadoluJet , AtlasGlobal , Freebird Airlines , Onur Air , Pegasus Airlines , Sunexpress and Turkish Airlines .

Flights to and from Ercan Airport are currently only possible with a stopover in Turkey , as Turkey is the only country that recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . Therefore there are no non-stop connections between other countries and Ercan Airport. Turkish airlines are also forced to make a stopover in Turkey. As a rule, the crew of the aircraft must also change during the stopover. Flights that are booked from Germany to Northern Cyprus have as their final destination the Turkish airport, where the stopover takes place, as the official destination airport.

There are currently non-stop connections to the following cities: Adana , Ankara , Antakya , Antalya , Diyarbakir , Gaziantep , Istanbul and Izmir .
