The Essex County Airport ( IATA : CDW , ICAO : KCDW ), also "Caldwell Airport ", is a regional airport in Fairfield Township , Essex County , New Jersey . It's located four kilometers north of downtown Caldwell . The airport is owned by the Essex County Improvement Authority .

General

The airport covers an area of ​​111 hectares and is 52 meters above sea level . It has two asphalt runways (4/22 and 10/28). As of November 2015, the airport had 70,266 flight movements, of which 96.2% were civil , 2.5% air taxis and 1.3% military . In August 2017, 229 aircraft and 8 helicopters were stationed at the airport. Most of the planes were single-engine private planes .

history

In April 1929 the Essex Airport Corporation was founded by Walter Marvin and six other people. The goal of this organization was to create an airport for the city of Montclair , New Jersey , seven miles away . The site chosen was a property owned by the Fairfield Dairy Company that had already been used as an airfield during the First World War .

The airport gained international fame after John F. Kennedy Jr. crashed into the sea on July 16, 1999, an hour after taking off from the airport, northeast of New York . John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Caroline and his sister-in-law were killed on board the Piper Saratoga .

Airlines and Destinations

The airport is not served by scheduled airlines. Tropic Ocean Airways connects the airport with New York's Seaplane Base seasonally .

Incidents

  • On August 29, 1982, a Cessna 172 collided with a student pilot and his instructor with a Cessna 150 that was flown by a student pilot. Both occupants were killed on board the Cessna 172. The pilot of the Cessna 150 made an emergency landing .
  • On November 15, 2002, a Mooney M10 ( aircraft registration number N9502V ) and a Piper PA-32R-300 collided while both pilots were looking for a route to runway 22. The pilots of both planes were killed in the collision.
  • On January 15, 2007, a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza crashed on a street near the airport and burned down completely after touching trees. The pilot of the plane was killed.
  • On July 5, 2010, a Cirrus SR22 crashed on approach about 100 meters north of the airport. All three occupants were killed in the accident.
  • On August 15, 2015, shortly after take-off, the pilot of a Cessna 205 reported that he had no control over the aircraft and was flying back to the airport. Shortly thereafter, the plane took a dive, grazed trees, and crashed. The pilot died in the fire.
