Fluticasone is a synthetic drug from the group of glucocorticoids .

properties

Fluticasone is a synthetic and fluorinated glucocorticoid. The esters fluticasone propionate and fluticasone furoate are used medicinally . Fluticasone propionate is a colorless solid that is a white to almost white powder. The molecule is very lipophilic . Therefore, it is almost insoluble in water , but it quickly gets into cells and binds to cytosolic glucocorticoid receptors . The active substance is metabolized by the enzyme CYP3A4 .

use

Fluticasone is an anti-inflammatory , antiallergic and immunosuppressive agent that is used, among other things, to treat bronchial asthma and obstructive pulmonary diseases . Other areas of indication include a. allergic rhinitis , nasal polyps and dermatoses .

Side effects

The most common adverse effects are Candida albicans infections of the lining of the mouth and throat ( oral thrush ). Upper respiratory infections, hoarseness, pneumonia in COPD patients, headaches , fatigue, vulnerability of the skin and bruises are also frequently observed. In order to avoid undesirable effects on the mucous membrane of the mouth and throat, the mouth should be rinsed with water or something to eat after inhalation. Very rare undesirable effects include Quincke's edema , allergies , Cushing's syndrome , inhibition of adrenal function , growth retardation in children and adolescents, decreased bone density , glaucoma , hyperglycaemia, anxiety, sleep disorders, behavior changes, and paradoxical bronchospasm .

Dosage forms and trade names

Fluticasone is available as a nasal spray , powder inhalation , suspension for inhalation (metered dose aerosol), cream and ointment . It has been approved in Switzerland since 1993.
