The Focke Garden (Fockegarten) - also known as the Museum Garden - is a park on the western edge of Bremen's old town. As a named part of the Bremen ramparts , it is a listed building.

history

Sundial by August Tölken

On the site of today's Focke Garden, Hermann Brüggemann built the Bremen poor house from 1696 to 1698 , which was later used as a home for the elderly . After the retirement home moved to the Osterholz district of Bremen ( Egestorff Foundation ), the Focke Museum was located here from 1912 until it was destroyed in World War II (1944) .

The Focke Garden was laid out in the 1950s on the site of the Focke Museum, which was destroyed in the war and was founded by the Bremen lawyer Johann Focke (1848 to 1922). The area was included in the Bremen ramparts so that they also extend to the Weser at their western end . The garden is divided into several concentric levels with a rectangular floor plan by means of brick walls. The outermost level is already below street level, the levels further inside are each a few steps lower ( sunken garden ). In the park there is an equatorial sundial by the sculptor August Tölken (1892–1975) on a pedestal from 1747 . Numerous plants and trees can be found in the garden, including climbing hydrangeas , goat's beard , magnolias , ginkgos , irises , kiwi and citrus trees . At the end of the area, the so-called French Gate was integrated into the design. Today the gate in Schwachhausen is on the grounds of the Focke Museum.

After the expansion of federal highway 6 as a dual carriageway in the 1960s, the Focke-Garten had a shadowy existence due to its location between expressway, railway line and Weser. Therefore it was not well cared for by the horticultural department and it was overgrown. The redesign of the Schlachte has improved accessibility over the past few years. The garden and the surrounding area were cleared and replanted as part of the implementation of the park maintenance work for the ramparts (on the occasion of her 200th birthday in 2002), the paths, walls and gates were renovated and new lighting was installed. A large part of the bicycle traffic between the city center and the west of Bremen is led along the park. During the summer of 2006, an open-air restaurant was operated at the entrance to the park.
