The Fokker FV was a single-engine airliner made by the Dutch manufacturer Nederlandsche Viegenuigenfabriek in the 1920s. The aircraft, which can be used either as a high-decker or a double-decker , offered space for up to eight passengers. Only a prototype was built.

history

Before Anton Fokker went to the USA in 1922, he commissioned his chief designer Reinhold Platz to design a new type of airliner. It should be able to convert from a double-decker with a high take-off weight to a high-decker with higher speed in a short time. An on-board toilet was provided in the passenger cabin. With eight passenger seats, it should be slightly larger than the previously built models F.II and F.III .

The prototype made its maiden flight on December 7, 1922 . It was found that the plywood cladding of the passenger cabin tended to vibrate and caused considerable noise pollution inside the cabin. In the end, this meant that no customers could be acquired and series production ceased.

construction

The hull construction consisted of a tubular steel frame, which was covered with fabric on the outside. The area of the passenger cabin, which was clad in plywood both inside and out, was an exception. This should increase the stability of the aircraft. However, these double walls were prone to strong vibrations. The cabin was unusually comfortable with toilet and heating. The aircraft had an open two-man cockpit with controls in both seats.

The wings of the double-decker version did not receive any wire bracing to facilitate the conversion to a high-wing aircraft. Only the lower wings had to be removed and the upper ones extended with them.

In order to reduce the noise pollution, the Rolls-Royce V-engine should be equipped with a four-blade propeller. As such was not available, two two-bladed propellers were mounted in a cross on top of each other.

use

After the FV was commissioned, extensive testing was carried out by the Dutch aviation authority. The idea of having the aircraft fly as far as Batavia on a trial basis was given up. Later it was temporarily left to Deruluft , who, however, decided not to order it after two weeks of testing. It was not until 1926 that the prototype could be sold to the Austrian ÖLAG .
