The Fokker V.4 was a prototype of a German fighter aircraft from the First World War .
development
Inspired by the successful Sopwith triplane was Anthony Fokker of Reinhold Place a triplane construct. Two prototypes were built after an order from July 11, 1917 with the serial numbers 1729 and 1730 and delivered to the front for testing in mid-August, where they were tested as F I 102/17 and F I 103/17. The two aircraft differed from the later Dr.I only in small details . On September 23, 1917, the highly decorated fighter pilot Werner Voss with serial number 1730 was fatally shot down in an aerial battle.
Another already on June 13 in 1917 by the Austro-Hungarian georderter and -Military with cantilever equipped triplane wings with the serial number 1661 (later 101/17) was initially the factory designation D.VI, but was subsequently renamed V.4 and the end of August for evaluation sent to the Allgemeine Ungarische Maschinenfabrik AG (Magyar Általános Gépgyár) in Mátyásföld in Austria-Hungary , now a district of Budapest . A second D.VI with the work number 1697 received a straight horizontal tail edge and became the actual prototype of the Dr.I.
In the past, the self-supporting version was erroneously referred to as V.3 . The aviation historian Peter M. Grosz corrected this error in the development line.
