The Fokker F.XXXVI was a four-engine airliner made by the Dutch manufacturer Nederlandsche Viegenuigenfabriek in the 1930s. The model name is an allusion to the size of the aircraft, which, including the cockpit crew, could carry 36 people. Due to its capacity and high level of comfort, the aircraft was nicknamed the "Flying Hotel".

The composite construction aircraft could not keep up with the all-metal aircraft of that time. Only the prototype was built and put into service by KLM .

history

In 1932, the KLM airline signaled its interest in a large long-haul aircraft for the route to Southeast Asia. Fokker then began developing a four-engine model. The first flight took place on June 22, 1934.

The announced order for six aircraft did not materialize. KLM was only ready to take over the prototype in 1935 after extensive testing. The airline had previously for the advanced all-metal aircraft of the type Douglas DC-2 decided who possessed a significantly higher range.

The prototype was used on the routes from Amsterdam to Berlin and London in the following years. KLM sold the aircraft to Scottish Aviation in 1939 , which was used to operate No. 12 EFTS (Elementary Flying Training School) was responsible. The machine served as a training aircraft for navigators in the following months. After a starting accident in May 1940, it could no longer be repaired and was scrapped.

construction

The construction of the F.XXXVII largely corresponded to the previous models of the 1920s. The supporting structure of the fuselage consisted of welded chrome-molybdenum-steel pipes and was covered with fabric throughout. Only the fuselage bow had plywood planking. The wings of the cantilever high-wing aircraft were made entirely of wood. In addition to the fuel tanks, there was additional storage space for luggage. The fixed tail wheel landing gear was also suitable for landings on poor ground.

The two pilot seats were arranged one behind the other, including two additional seats for a radio navigator and an on-board steward. The air-conditioned and soundproofed cabin was divided into four compartments for eight passengers each. Two seats each could be converted into a bed so that 16 people could be carried on night flights. The aircraft was equipped with a galley, two toilets and a cloakroom. Two additional beds were available for the crew.

The drive was four Wright Cyclone radial engines , which were attached to the leading edges of the wings and each received a three-blade propeller.
