The Fokker F.IX was a three-engine airliner made in 1929 by the Dutch manufacturer NV Nederlandsche Viegenuigenfabriek . It offered space for 20 passengers. Due to the global economic crisis , only two aircraft could be sold. One variant was the Avia F.39 bomber built in Czechoslovakia .

history

In 1925 the Dutch airline KLM showed interest in an aircraft for twenty people, with which a line service to the Dutch East Indies could be set up. With the F.IX, a further development of the three-engine F.VII, Fokker was able to meet the requirements for the first time. The first flight of the prototype took place on August 23, 1929. In 1930 the F.IX took part in the Paris Air Show. Due to the global economic crisis that had broken out in the meantime, it was hardly possible to sell an aircraft of this size.

After KLM had initially planned to purchase ten aircraft, the company decided in 1930 for the smaller F.XII . Only two F.IX were delivered to KLM. The aircraft were used on a trial basis on the East India route in November 1930 and February 1931. The first plane was lost in an accident in 1931. The second was used on the route from Amsterdam to London until 1936.

In 1936 the remaining F.IX came into the possession of Air Tropique , a front company of the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War . After its renovation, it served as a bomber and was used by the Spanish Air Force after the war.

Avia F.IX

On the basis of the F.IX, Avia developed the Avia F.39 bomber, which was used in Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia . Two planes came as Fokker-Avia F. IX D at the service of the airline ČSA . One of them came into the possession of the German Air Force in 1939 and also flew for Croatia.

construction

The F.IX was constructed in the composite construction typical of Fokker and designed as a cantilever high-decker . The fuselage consisted of a welded tubular steel frame with fabric covering, the wings had a wooden structure clad with plywood. The chassis was designed to be particularly robust. It consisted of two landing gear legs and a tail spur, which was later replaced by a tail wheel. The cabin offered space for 18 to 20 passengers with two-plus-one seating.

The original drive from three Gnôme-Rhône-Jupiter star engines was later replaced by more powerful Pratt & Whitney Hornets . As an experiment in 1934, a Wright Cyclone served as a mid-engine.
