Laucala ( spoken lauˈðala , hence Lauthala ) is a small island of the Fiji islands, off Taveuni to the east. The island is privately owned and is home to a luxury resort.

Location and landscape

The island lies - just on the date line - with the slightly larger Qamea and the small Matagi within the reef on the east coast of Taveuni, in front of Thurston Point . Laucala is the easternmost of the three islands. It has an area of about 12 km² and measures 5 × 3 km.

The main part of the island is an approximately 100 m high ridge of volcanic origin, the eastern part is hilly, in between and in the far east there is flat land. The north coast is particularly friendly. The island is made up of tropical rainforest, in flat settlement areas on about a quarter of the area with palm plantations.

history

The island was discovered for European geography by Abel Tasman in 1643 .

The island was sold to Europeans by the king of the united Fiji, Seru Epenisa Cakobau , before it was annexed to the United Kingdom in 1874. He was punishing that the island's inhabitants had made a pact with the chief of Tonga, Enele Ma'afu .

British growers practiced copra on the island . It later went to the Australian Carpenter Group , then Morris Hedstorm . It was acquired by American media mogul Malcolm Forbes in 1972 for $ 1 million, at the time it was called Forbes Island . Forbes also had the infrastructure expanded for the residents who live there and who work on his property and promoted their education with scholarships. In 1990 Forbes opened the island and rented out some cabins to tourists. Malcolm Forbes, who died in 1990, is buried on Laucala (Forbes Monument) .

In the course of the Speight military coup in 2000, the island was occupied and tourism was closed.

In 2003, Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz bought Laucala for 10 million euros from the Forbes heirs. He had the luxury resort expanded extensively - when it reopened in 2008 it became one of the most exclusive destinations in the Pacific region - and converted the island to largely self-sufficient and organic farming.

Settlement and Infrastructure

Laucala has a population of around 300 people. They live in the village of Laucala and are scattered along the coasts. They cultivate coconut, farm and fish in self-sufficiency and for the hotel industry, and work in tourism.

Lacaula Village

The village was restored in the architectural style of the Bures (Fijian huts) (in the times of Forbes the local thatch roofs were replaced by tile roofing) and is one of the last traditionally preserved villages in the archipelago.

The hotel business was founded by Malcolm Forbes in 1990 as Fiji Forbes , at the time as a small resort with seven huts, with catering in the Forbes private villa and under the direction of the village chief of Laucala.

In 2008 the Laucala Island Resort was re-established by Dietrich Mateschitz. The resort is considered one of the most exclusive in the ocean region (it was initially given seven stars , which is unusual today) and - as the only hotel in Fiji - is one of the Leading Hotels of the World .

It consists of 25 villas distributed in several groups on about 4500 m² on the north coast , which combine traditional Fidjian style with contemporary hotel architecture in the sense of regionalism of modernity , and are equipped with extensive infrastructure. The facilities were designed by the Fijian architecture firm Architects Pacific . A total of 5 restaurants are available that offer regional cuisine. Large parts of the island are designed as an 18-hole golf course , which was constructed in 2010 by David McLay Kidd ( DMK Golf Design ).

The villas can be rented and also purchased.
