Ford OHC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ford Pinto engine refers to a series of four-stroke - gasoline engines of the car manufacturer Ford . It is an inline four cylinder made of gray cast iron with a toothed belt drive and overhead camshaft "( OHC )". In Europe, the engine was used from the third series of the Ford Cortina and in the Ford Taunus and replaced the V4 engine types Essex and Cologne , but its use was not limited to the European market. It was Ford's first series engine with a toothed belt drive.

From the 1980s the engine was gradually replaced by the further development DOHC 8V , as well as the new engine types DOHC 16V , CVH and Zetec .

The engine was also known as the Pinto , named after the Ford Pinto for which the unit was originally developed.

Executions

The engine was available in five different displacement sizes (1.3, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 liters). The 2.3 liter engine, also known as the Lima OHC , was only offered in North and South America. For the market in North America was Lima OHC with turbochargers available.

Use in Europe

Use North and South America

A version of the Lima OHC with increased displacement to 2.5 liters with improved cylinder heads for fuel efficiency and emission reduction was installed in the Ford Ranger and Mazda B 2500 for North America between 1998 and 2001.

Further development

Cosworth

Engine of a Ford Sierra RS500

The engine block of the Ford OHC is the basis for the Cosworth YB engine. The British company Cosworth developed a 16V cylinder head with two overhead camshafts for the engine block of the OHC. This cylinder head was taken over by Ford in the series production of the Ford Sierra with a view to motorsport activities. The engine, offered exclusively with turbocharging, was offered in both the Sierra and the Escort RS Cosworth . With this engine, Ford achieved countless national and international individual victories and championships in touring car and rallying. The greatest successes were the start-to-finish victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 1987 for Klaus Ludwig , Klaus Niedzwiedz and Steve Soper and the DTM drivers' title in 1988 , also for Klaus Ludwig.

DOHC

DOHC 8V

Due to stricter emission laws , the DOHC 8V was developed and additionally offered at the end of the 1980s .

DOHC 16V

The later offered DOHC 16V , which was used in the Escort RS2000 16V , Galaxy and Scorpio , is a new development and has little in common with the OHC . The DOHC 16V has an independent engine block and a timing chain instead of a toothed belt.
