Formula 1: Drive to Survive is a documentary series from the US streaming service Netflix . The series follows the 2018 Formula 1 season from the perspective of the teams and drivers in the second row in their battle for the informal title “Best of the Rest.” The competition between the top teams Mercedes and Ferrari was left out in the first season. because the teams were the only ones who didn't give permission to shoot.
Content and production
Through interviews and recordings from the pit radio, the series gives detailed insights into the racing processes and the competitive relationship between the drivers. The protagonists include Romain Grosjean , Daniel Ricciardo , Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen . In addition, numerous interviews and recordings attract the attention of the team bosses such as Christian Horner ( Red Bull Racing ), Günther Steiner ( Haas F1 Team ), Cyril Abiteboul ( Renault Sport F1 Team ), Claire Williams ( Williams F1 ), Vijay Mallya ( Force India ) and Zak Brown ( McLaren Racing ).
The format was created under the direction of James Gay-Rees for the British production company Box to Box Films on behalf of Liberty Media , the owner of Formula 1 . The premiere was on March 8, 2019.
In July 2019, Formula 1 announced that a second season with all ten teams would be produced in 2020. The second season was released on February 28, 2020.
