Forth ( English for preview ) is the fourth and final studio album by the band The Verve . It was released on August 25, 2008 after the band's reunion the previous year. It reached # 1 on the British album charts and at # 10 had the band's best album placement in Germany.

description

After separating in 1999, the band found their original line-up again in the studio in 2007. The album shows the musical maturation of the individual members during the band break and still mainly cites old playing patterns of the band. The songs "Sit and Wonder" and "Numbness" are clearly reminiscent of the groovy soul rock times of A Northern Soul . "Judas", "Noise Epic" and "Columbo", however, tie in with the early spherical phase of the band and are characterized by improvisative, experimental song structures. What is striking is the clean sound of bass and drums, which were recorded almost like textbooks. While Nick McCabe's effect guitar gives the songs with a live atmosphere an oppressive, progressive heaviness.

The first single, "Love is Noise", atypically takes up disco elements and contains electronic sounds that are unusual for the band with the use of vocoder and synthesizer . The album also offers quieter ballads like the second single "Rather Be". These are very much influenced by Richard Ashcroft's most recent folkloric songwriting , as he developed it on his solo records. Only with "Valium Skies" is a song in the style of the Britpop anthems included, which would also have fit on the successful album Urban Hymns .

status

The band recorded the album in the State of the Ark studio in London and initially produced and mixed it for the most part themselves. Like Ashcroft's previous solo album, the album was released on Parlophone.

criticism

The reviews of the music press were unanimously negative for the album. Richard Ashcroft himself described the album as a nostalgic undertaking, from which he could hardly gain potential for new developments. Simon Jones (bassist) then accused Ashcroft of wanting to have only fueled his stalled solo career with the reunion.
