The Forum Steglitz is a shopping center in the Berlin district of Steglitz , right on the border with the Friedenau district in Schloßstraße .
history
When it opened on April 23, 1970, it was one of the first shopping centers in Germany to use the shop-in-shop system. It quickly developed into a center of attraction in the south of Berlin. A special feature were the two moving walks in the main hall, which led from the entrance area to the first floor.
It currently houses around 60 shops and restaurants with a total sales area of around 32,000 m².
A multi-storey car park is connected to the shopping center and can be reached via Bornstrasse or Gutsmuthsstrasse .
A weekly market - what was then the Bornmarkt - had been held on the grounds of the Forum Steglitz since 1908 . When the planning for the Forum Steglitz began in 1968, one of the specifications for the client was to integrate this traditional weekly market into the shopping center. This was implemented through a sales area in the rear part of the ground floor, where small plots for sales stalls and built-in kiosks could be rented by dealers. During the renovation in 2005 this market disappeared.
Until the lifting of the visa requirement for visits by West Berliners to the GDR in December 1989, there was an office on the upper floor for visiting and travel matters . Here were visa applications for visits to East Berlin and the GDR are submitted. The facility was directly subordinate to the Ministry for State Security of the GDR and most of the employees came from East Berlin.
From May 2005 to May 18, 2007 the Forum Steglitz was rebuilt with the aim of modernizing it and expanding the sales area.
The forum has been under construction again since February 2019 in order to reposition it as a mixed-used property .
