The early sedge ( Carex praecox ), also known as early sedge , is a species of the genus Seggen ( Carex ) within the sour grass family (Cyperaceae). It is common in Eurasia . For Switzerland is as common name also Kaminfegerli occupied.

Vegetative characteristics

The early sedge grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The always upright stems are longer than the leaves.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to June. The early sedge is a sedge of the same age. The ears of wheat are straight. The husks are dark brown in color and about a third shorter than the fruit sacs . The tubes are winged in their upper two thirds and narrow in the beak.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 58.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the early sedge includes the montane- submeridional zone of Eurasia and extends from Europe to Central Asia. It also occurs in Central Europe, for example in Switzerland and Austria. In Germany it is classified as endangered.

The early sedge grows as ruderal vegetation on dry grassland and prefers sandy, alkaline and dry slopes. It thrives in societies of the Convolvulo-Agropyrion association or the order Corynephoretalia.

Carex praecox was first published in 1771 by Johann Christian von Schreber . The specific epithet praecox means early flowering.
