François Jacques Affolter (born March 13, 1991 in Biel ) is a Swiss football player .
Player career
society
Affolter comes from the football school of FC Biel-Bienne and moved to BSC Young Boys in 2007 . He made his Super League debut on September 14, 2008 in a 2-1 away win over AC Bellinzona . The defender played in the UEFA Cup for the first time on October 2, 2008 . In the 0-2 away defeat at Club Bruges , he played the full 90 minutes.
On January 24, 2012, Affolter moved to Werder Bremen on loan with an option to buy until the end of the year . He made his Bundesliga debut on the 19th match day on January 28, 2012 in the home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . At Bremen he was able to assert himself in central defense alongside Sokratis until the end of the season . He also benefited from Naldo and Sebastian Prödl's longer injuries .
The injured returned for the 2012/13 season and Naldo was replaced by Assani Lukimya . From then on, Affolter had to come to terms with number four in the central defender. This was also helped by his participation in the 2012 Olympic football tournament , which meant that he missed some of the summer preparations. In the first half of the season Affolter was no longer considered. He gained some match practice in the second team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord . At the end of 2012 Werder Bremen did not use the agreed purchase option and Affolter returned to BSC Young Boys at the turn of the year.
Affolter moved to FC Luzern at the beginning of 2014 . He received a long-term contract from Central Switzerland until June 2018. On July 19, 2017, it was announced that the contract with FC Luzern had been prematurely terminated by mutual agreement. A short time later, he moved to Major League Soccer for the San José Earthquakes and signed a contract until the end of 2019.
Since February 2020 he has been back in Switzerland for the Challenge League club FC Aarau .
National team
On August 3, 2010 Affolter was nominated for the first time for the Swiss national team and made his debut eight days later in the game against Austria . U-21 national coach Pierluigi Tami nominated Affolter for the squad for the U-21 European Championship 2011 in Denmark, in which he and his team took second place. Although he was part of the starting line-up and played through in the first game against Denmark , he missed the rest of the tournament due to a torn muscle in his right thigh.
In summer 2012 he took part in the Olympic football tournament in London with the Swiss Olympic team. For Switzerland this was the first participation in 84 years. He came to a mission.
