François Cotinaud (2015)

François Cotinaud (born August 9, 1956 in Casablanca ) is a French saxophonist and clarinetist of creative jazz and composer.

biography

Cotinaud learned the piano from the age of eight, before turning to drums (1967 to 1972) and then switching to tenor and soprano saxophone . He took lessons from Alan Silva , Jo Maka , Archie Shepp , Steve Lacy , but was also influenced by Jimmy Lyons , Lee Konitz , Steve Coleman and Garrett List . He also taught Art Culture Perception at Silva's Institute from 1977 to 1986 , where he also met Itaru Oki , Denis Colin , Didier Petit, Bruno Girard, Pascal Bréchet and even Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor . Between 1982 and 1985 he was the head of the school.

Composer, musician

In 1977 he founded the Ensemble Texture , which existed until 1987. He also played with the Silvas Celestrial Orchestra ( Portrait for a small woman 1978, Desert Mirage 1982) and with musicians such as Kent Carter , Bobby Few , Barry Guy , Claudine François , Daunik Lazro , François Méchali , Sun Ra , Bruno Chevillon , Charles Tyler , Barre Phillips , Carlos Zingaro ( No Meat Inside 2013) and Mike Zwerin .

With Ramón López , Heriberto Paredes and Thierry Colson, he founded a quartet in 1985, which was expanded to include guest soloists in the following years. His solo album Loco solo had Luciano Berio's Sequenza IX as a starting point. In addition, he dealt with the Sephardic musical tradition with the pianist Sylvie Cohen .

In the Trio Left he works with Joëlle Léandre and François Merville . He also plays in Air Lunch with Valentine Quintin and Philippe Lemoine. From 2002 to 2006 he directed the Text'up ensemble , which was inspired by works by Raymond Queneau , André Velter and Arthur Rimbaud . In 2013 he recorded with Algèbre (Pierre Durand, Daniel Beaussier, Bruno Chevillon , François Merville, Denis Charolles).

In 2015 he founded the Ensemble Luxus together with Pascale Labbé (voice) and Jérôme Lefebvre (guitar) , which uses Rainer Maria Rilke's poems as the starting point for his music.

Sound painting

He plays with SPOUMJ under the baton of François Jeanneau (Soundpainting Orchestra, Union of the Jazz Musicians). Building on the concept of sound painting , he has been working with his Klangfarben-Ensemble (nine musicians, two actresses, two dancers) since 2010. The music is based on sound painting and improvisation.

From 2013 to 2014 he founded the first sound painting festival in Paris with Helsinki Soundpainting Ensemble, Klangfarben ensemble, Le Spoumj, Amalgammes, TSO, Le Spang, Walter Thompson Orchestra, la Louve, Batik Soundpainting Orchestra.

He teaches sound painting at the Conservatoire Mozart in Paris - the first official sound painting class in France.
