François Merville

François Merville (* 1968 ) is a French percussionist who has emerged primarily in the field of jazz .

Merville received music lessons from the age of seven. He studied classical percussion at the CNR in Rueil and at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris ; at the end of his studies he received a prize for outstanding performance in percussion in 1988 as well as a first prize for percussion instruments and a first prize for chamber music in Paris .

In 1991 he took part in a tour of the Ensemble InterContemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez . In 1984 he made his jazz debut with Jacky Terrasson . Later he was a member of the groups of Noël Akchoté and Bojan Zulfikarpašić (with this group he won First Prize at the La Défense jazz competition in 1992 ). He became internationally known since he became a partner of Louis Sclavis in 1994 , first in a trio with Bruno Chevillon , then in a quintet. He played several albums with him and toured Europe, the Middle East and America with him again and again until 2010. In 1996 he also appeared in a duo with trombonist Ray Anderson at various festivals. He also worked with Bernard Struber , Marc Ducret , Jean-Louis Matinier , Dominique Pifarély , Dave Douglas , Django Bates , but also Michel Portal . In 1995 he formed a trio with Stéphan Oliva and Bruno Chevillon (with whom the album Jade Visions was created in 2001 ) and his quintet (with Sébastien Texier , Guillaume Orti , Vincent Segal and François Thuillier ), with whom he released the album La part de l ' in 2000 ombre submitted. In 1999 he took the Dodekaband of Martial Solal on. In 2000 he worked with the songwriter Thomas Fersen . In 2003 he joined the trio zam , whose other members are Olivier Sens and Vincent Courtois . In 2004 he founded (with Christophe Monniot , Gilles Coronado and Nicolas Le Moullec) the quartet O mago Hermeto , which is dedicated to the music of Hermeto Pascoal (album of the same name in 2007). He also played in the trio of the Danish guitarist Hasse Poulsen , in the septet of Laurent Dehors and in the groups of Henri Texier , Vincent Courtois, Jean-Marie Machado and Denis Colin .
