François Louis von Chappuis (born December 11, 1751 in Verz-chez-Berthoud near Puidoux, Canton of Vaud , † August 5, 1830 in Tharnau ) was a Prussian colonel and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Life

origin

François Louis came from the Protestant Chappuis family from the French-speaking part of Switzerland and was the founder of the Prussian noble line. His parents were Jean Noe Chappuis (1731-1803), previously Asseseur Consistorial, Justicier and Conseilleur of the large parish of St. Saphorin, and Jeanne Marie Leyvraz (1731-1793).

Military career

François Louis Chappuis left his native Switzerland and entered Prussian military service . He became an officer in the infantry and took part in the campaigns of the coalition against revolutionary France. Obviously it has proven itself in action, because King Friedrich Wilhelm II raised the civil officer to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 8, 1794. In the war of Prussia in 1806/07 against Napoleon he distinguished himself, meanwhile lieutenant colonel , especially in the defense of the city of Danzig in 1807, so that King Friedrich Wilhelm III. distinguished him as commander of the fusilier battalion "Rühle" on June 19, 1807 with the order Pour le Mérite. Although the reasons for the award have not been passed down, the award arises indirectly from the certificate that the investigation, which all Prussian officers had to face after the Tilsit Peace regarding their behavior during the war, was submitted by the oldest officers present. The certificate says: "That they have nothing to say against the official behavior during the defense of Danzig that could be detrimental to the same and that the same has done his duty and behaved impeccably."

Chappuis remained in active service despite the drastic army reductions imposed by Napoleon Prussia in the Peace of Tilsit and still achieved the rank of colonel .
