Carl von Treskow (also Johann Carl Sigismund von Treskow ) (born September 23, 1787 in Berlin , † October 4, 1846 in Friedrichsfelde near Berlin) was a Prussian agricultural reformer and landowner.

origin

Carl von Treskow was born as the second son of Sigmund Otto Joseph von Treskow (* 1756; † 1825). He was the owner of a factory for the production of silk flowers in Berlin and later expanded the trade in haberdashery to include the trade in fabrics for uniforms, which made him a supplier for the army and a wealthy wholesale merchant.

The father, who came from a modest background as the illegitimate son of a nobleman from the von Tresckow family, achieved social advancement and in 1797 he was certified as a Prussian nobility by Treskow . The mother was Anna Sara George (* 1763; † 1834), daughter of the wealthy distiller Benjamin George, who brought the four houses at Zimmerstrasse 84-87 with the distillery "Zur Goldenen Kugel" into the marriage as a dowry .

Life

After attending a grammar school in Gotha and the Brandenburg Knight Academy , in 1803 he took over the administration of his father's property in Owinsk near Posen . In 1812 he married his cousin Julie Jouanne (* 1791; † 1852), daughter of the businessman Jean Jouanne and Susanne George, a sister of his mother. After the marriage, Carl was disinherited by his father and then moved to the newly acquired Kade estate near Jerichow .

Thanks to the rich dowry of his wife and the fortune of his grandfather, he was able to acquire the manor Friedrichsfelde near Berlin in 1816. Under the influence of the Prussian agricultural reformer and founder of modern agricultural science Albrecht Thaer , he established a model agriculture here in the following years. In 1821 he commissioned the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné to redesign the park in Friedrichsfelde (now Tierpark Berlin ). In 1824, Carl von Treskow was one of the first members of the Association for the Promotion of Horticulture in the Royal Prussian States , founded by Lenné, and since that year he has also been a member of the Lawless Society of Berlin , whose members are predominantly the enlightened political, cultural and later increasingly belonged to the military elite.

His wife Julie von Treskow, who came from a wealthy Huguenot family and whose brother Jean Jouanne lived with his family on the neighboring Gut Britz from 1824 to 1857 , surrounded herself with a number of self-confident women who were artistically active and independent. Her guests included the painter Caroline Lauska , the ballerina Lamperi, Wolfhardine von Minutoli, who accompanied her husband on his trip to Egypt in 1820/21 , and Julie's best friend, the writer Henriette Paalzow . Her brother, the court painter and professor Karl Wilhelm Wach , portrayed Julie and counted her among his literary circle.

Social Commitment

In 1822 Treskow opened a so-called country school for needy children in the outbuildings of Friedrichsfelde Palace . In cooperation with Albrecht Thaer , the training of gardeners, estate managers and similar professions was prepared here and then ended with Thaer in the Agricultural Academy in Möglin . The Friedrichsfelder Landschule and the Mögliner Academy later merged into the newly founded agricultural faculty of the Berlin University .

As early as 1825 he had the Carlshorst Vorwerk built, from which today's Berlin district of Karlshorst developed. In 1900, with the opening of the tram line from Berlin to Friedrichsfelde, the connecting street was named Treskowallee in his honor . The section in Karlshorst has had his name again since 1992.

Resting place and offspring

Carl and Julie von Treskow found their final resting place on the hereditary funeral in the Friedrichsfelde Palace Park (today within the zoo area not far from the polar bear enclosure). This was created in 1821 on the occasion of the death of their son Leo, who was only three months old, and is maintained by the zoo administration.

One of his six sons, who reached adulthood, was the Prussian politician and landowner Julius von Treskow (* 1818; † 1894), who was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly from May 1848 to May 1849 . His brother Carl von Treskow (* 1819; † 1882) became a member of the German Reichstag in 1871 . Carl's son Sigismund von Treskow (* 1864, † 1945), Prussian district administrator in the Niederbarnim district since 1898 , was the last owner of Friedrichsfelde Palace until 1945 .
