Francesco Cozza (painter)

Francesco Cozza (* 1605 in Stilo ; † January 13, 1682 ) was an Italian Baroque painter .

Life

Cozza was born in Stilo in Calabria in 1605 and died in Rome on January 13, 1682 at the age of 77 . As a young man he moved to Rome, where he did an apprenticeship with Domenichino and traveled with him to Naples in 1634 .

He became known for his ceiling fresco Apotheosis of the Pamphili House (1667–1673) in the library of the Palazzo Pamphilj on Piazza Navona in Rome. From 1658 to 1659 he painted the fresco Stanza del Fuoco in the Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj in Valmontone , where he worked alongside Pier Francesco Mola , Gaspar Dughet , Mattia Preti , Giovanni Battista Tassi ( il Cortonese ) and Guglielmo Cortese . He also worked with Carlo Maratta and Domenico Maria Canuti on the frescoes of the Palazzo Altieri in Rome. His landscapes are reminiscent of the Carracci style of paesi con figure piccole (landscapes with small figures). He also painted the Madonna del Riscatto in the Church of Santa Francesca Romana . In 1650 he was accepted into the Accademia di San Luca in Rome.
