Francesco Maria Machiavelli or Macchiavelli (* 1608 or 1610 in Florence , † November 20 or 22, 1653 in Ferrara ) was an Italian cardinal and patriarch.

biography

As the third-born son of Filippo Machiavelli and Maria Magalotti, he could boast of an illustrious family through his mother who favored his ecclesiastical career. He was not only nephew of Cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti , but also related to Maffeo Barberini , since his aunt Costanza Magalotti married his brother Carlo Barberini . When Maffeo Barberini was elected Pope under the name Urban VIII, Machiavelli was sent to Rome to study at the seminary (first grammar and humanities, then law). At a very young age he was appointed canon in St. Peter's Basilica by the Pope .

When Benedetto Monaldi Baldeschi was promoted to cardinal in December 1633 , the Pope again proposed Machiavelli as auditor of the Roman Rota . He held this office until 1638. On October 11, 1638, he received the diocese of Ferrara with dispensation because he had not yet received the ordination. On March 26, 1640 he was consecrated as Patriarch of Constantinople , where he was allowed to keep his diocese. Pope Urban VIII appointed him cardinal in the consistory on December 16, 1641 . Machiavelli received the titular church from Santi Giovanni e Paolo . In 1644 he took part in the conclave that Pope Innocent X elected.

He died on November 22nd, 1653. He was buried in the Cathedral of Ferrara in front of the Guardian Angel Altar and then transferred to the Altar of San Lorenzo, where his predecessor was also buried.
