Francesco Serra
Francesco Serra , also Francesco Serra di Cassano or Francesco Serra Cassano , (born February 21, 1783 in Naples , † August 17, 1850 in Capua ) was an Italian cardinal who was Archbishop of Capua from 1826 .
Life
Francesco Serra was a son of the Duke of Cassano Luigi Serra and his wife Giulia Carafa Cantelmo Stuart. He was ordained a priest on March 1, 1806 and then studied law in Camerino . After completing his studies, he became titular archbishop of Nicaea in 1818 . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca , co-consecrators were Cardinal Fabrizio Sceberras Testaferrata and Archbishop Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri . In the same year Serra was nuncio in Bavaria .
In July 1826 he became coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Capua , only three weeks later he became archbishop himself . Pope Gregory XVI appointed Serra cardinal in pectore on September 30, 1831 , his creation was not announced publicly until 1833 and he was appointed cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi XII Apostoli .
Francesco Serra took part in the conclave of 1846 that Pius IX. elected to the Pope. He died four years later in Capua and was buried in the local cathedral .
