Francis Charmes
Francis Charmes , actually Marie-François Charmes , (born April 21, 1848 at Château de Baradel , Aurillac , † January 4, 1916 in Paris ) was a French journalist , diplomat and politician.
Life
Charmes attended high schools in Clermont-Ferrand and Poitiers and was then a civil servant in the state welfare office. A journalistic career began shortly after the Franco-Prussian War . He was quickly considered a talented writer and in 1872 became editor of the Journal des Débats . In 1880 the French government appointed him deputy head of the political department of the Foreign Office. In 1885 Charmes was head of department and stayed until 1889. Then he returned to journalism and worked again for the Journal des Débats until 1907. He also wrote regularly for the Revue des Deux Mondes .
As early as the beginning of the 1880s, Charmes was also politically active: From 1881 to 1885 and from 1889 to 1898 he was a member of the Cantal Department in the French Chamber of Deputies . From 1900 to 1912 he was then a member of the Senate .
Francis Charmes was elected to the 40th armchair in the Académie française in 1908 .
