Francis Pangilinan

Francis Nepomuceno "Kiko" Pangilinan (born August 24, 1963 in Manila ) is a Filipino politician of the Liberal Party and was a member of the Senate of the Philippines from 2001 to 2013 .

Life

Studies and professional career

After attending elementary school and high school at De La Salle College , he first studied English from 1983 to 1986 at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City , where he majored in comparative literature . He was already politically active during his studies and was a member of the Quezon City council from 1988 to 1992 .

He completed another law degree at UP Diliman in 1993 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He then worked as a lawyer and most recently as a senior partner at the law firm Franco, Pangilinan, Tolentino, Ringler and Santo Law Offices , and also legal advisor and appraiser at the media group ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation .

He completed another postgraduate course in public administration at Harvard University in 1998 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA). Afterwards he was not only a lecturer for management at the Ateneo de Manila University , but also moderator of the programs "Batas" and "Relos Report" on the radio station dzMM and the television program "Barangay Dos" on ABS-CBN.

Kiko Pangilinan has been married to Sharon Cuneta , the “superstar of Filipino showbiz”, since 1998 and has two daughters together: Simone Francesca Emmanuelle (Frankie), born in November 2000, and Mariel Daniella Sophia (Miel), born in September 2004.

Political career

Quezon City

Pangilinan's active civic and political activity began when he was involved in urban affairs as a student. He has over 21 years experience in public administration and was the youngest elected councilor in Quezon City from 1988-1992. During his tenure, he developed an awareness of the need for early training for young elected officials and officials with legislative power. He founded the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL ), of which he became president.

In 2001 he was first elected Senator for the Liberal Party. First he was chairman of the committees for ethics and privileges, for urban planning, housing and settlement, and for justice and human rights between August 2001 and January 2004, and also for education, art and culture from February 2003 to January 2004.

In January 2004 he succeeded Loren Legarda as Majority Floor Leader leader of the government majority and Chairman of the Rules Committee. He thus became the youngest majority leader since 1937 and at the same time by virtue of office a member of all other committees of the Senate.

In 2007 he was re-elected as an independent for another term and confirmed as majority leader. In November 2008 he was succeeded by Juan Miguel Zubiri in the position of Majority Leader. On June 30, 2013, Pangilinan resigned from the Senate after he was not allowed to run for two consecutive terms.

Member of the Aquino government

In May 2014, Pangilinan was appointed Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization . He was a member of the government cabinet of President Benigno Aquino III . In September 2015, Pangilinan announced his resignation.
