Francisco Bolognesi Cervantes (born November 4, 1816 in Lima , Peru, † June 7, 1880 in Arica ) was a Peruvian colonel and is considered a national hero and "patron" of the Peruvian army .

Life

Bolognesi was born in Lima as the son of the violinist Andrés Bolognesi from Genoa , who had lived in Peru since 1810, and Juana Cervantes Pacheco from Arequipa . His parents' house was on "Calle de Afligido" (today: Jirón Caylloma 125). He was baptized in St. Sebastian's Church in Lima.

As a toddler, he moved with his parents to Arequipa , where he attended the Seminary of San Jerónimo from the age of 8 to 16 . After the death of his father, he had to look after the family and began to work for the Lebris y Violler trading company.

On July 22, 1844 Bolognesi took part as a reservist in the Battle of Carmen Alto (district of Arequipa), in which the troops of Ramón Castilla y Marquesado (since February 17, 1844 President of Peru ) the troops of Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco Iturralde (self-proclaimed president from March 20, 1843 to July 17, 1844). Because of his achievements in the battle, he was offered a military career, which he initially refused.

In 1879, at the beginning of the Saltpeter War, the then 62-year-old Bologensi was reactivated from retirement and took part in the Battle of Dolores and the Battle of Tarapacá against Chile in November 1879 .

On June 7, 1880, the Peruvian garrison in the city of Arica, occupied by 2,000 soldiers, was attacked by 7,000 Chilean soldiers under the command of Division General Manuel Jesús Baquedano González and with the support of the Navy. The commander of the Peruvian troops was Colonel Bolognesi, who was killed while defending the garrison.

Bolognesi's sons Enrique and Augusto also fought in the Saltpeter War and were killed during the Battle of San Juan and the Battle of Miraflores (Lima), respectively.

After his death

On January 2, 1951, Bolognesi was declared patron of the Peruvian army. Bolognesi was posthumously promoted to Grand Marshal by Law No. 25128 of November 30, 1989 .

The football club Coronel Bolognesi , founded in Tacna on October 18, 1929 , was named after him.

Several ships of the Peruvian Navy were named Coronel Bolognesi .

An Argentine artillery unit stationed in Salta was named after Bolognesi ( Grupo de Artillería 15 “CORONEL FRANCISCO BOLOGNESI” ).
