Francisco Eppens Helguera

Francisco Eppens Helguera (born February 1, 1913 in San Luis Potosí , † September 6, 1990 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican painter, coat of arms painter, postage stamp artist and sculptor . Among other things, he designed the current Mexican coat of arms in 1968 as well as several postage stamps .

Eppens came to Mexico City in 1920, attended the Instituto Politécnico Nacional from 1926 and the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria a year later in preparation for a degree in architecture . Instead of the originally intended study of architecture, he then attended the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes from 1928 to 1929 , where he received painting and graphics lessons from Enrique Ugarte and from Ignacio Asúnsolo in sculpture . From 1930 he worked as a set designer and painter in the film business and from 1935 designed postage and tax stamps for the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público for many years. In the late 1930s, some of his designs were among the best in the world in Scott's Monthly Journal for postage stamps. At that time he frequented the “Rancho del Artista”, Francisco Cornejo's artist pub , where Dr. Atl , Diego Rivera , Jorge González Camarena , David Alfaro Siqueiros , José Clemente Orozco , José Miguel Covarrubias , Enrique González Martínez and Andrés Audiffred were regularly present. Eppens was a member of the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios . In 1944 the Collectors Club of New York was invited . From 1950 he himself painted murales at the children's clinic in the Mexican capital, on the central building of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional and at the Teatro Morelos of Aguascalientes , a few years later in the university town of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, as well as a wall mosaic there Medical Faculty. In 1964, a year later, Jorge González Camarena and Roberto Álvarez Espinosa presented a design for the redesign of the center of Mexico City. In the mid-1960s, he was commissioned by the Mexican government to redesign the national emblem, with Gustavo Díaz Ordaz placing particular emphasis on a slightly more aggressive appearance for the eagle. In 1970 he was invited to the American Philatelic Congress . Worth mentioning is his design of a streamlined vehicle body, which can be seen in a few Mexican films.

Eppens has received several awards for its stamp motifs. Since 1947 he was married to María Lascurain Segovia . The children Gabriela , Alejandro and Rodrigo Eppens Lascurain emerged from the marriage.
