Franck Cammas (* 22. December 1972 in Aix-en-Provence , France) is a French professional yachtsman who primarily by regatta successes and speed records - including 2010, the fastest circumnavigation of the globe - the trimarans Groupama 2 and Groupama 3 has become famous is.

Life

1972–1994: youth and beginning of the sailing career

Cammas grew up as the son of two teachers (technology and science) and the grandson of Italian grandparents in Provence, in a house without running water. The sport swimmer first sailed 420 dinghies in Marseille , southern France. At the age of 15, he learned about yacht sailing at the Les Glénans sailing school in Brittany . After completing his second Glénans course, at the age of 17 he became a volunteer sailing instructor for the sailing school, which enabled him to sail for free.

After graduating from high school, Cammas, who learned or had learned piano and violin at the conservatoire (music school), took classes préparatoires higher mathematics ( mathématiques supérieures , math sup for short ) and special mathematics ( Mathématiques spéciales , math spé for short ). But Cammas turned away from studies and turned to the sea: at the age of 21, Cammas graduated from the Institut Nautique de Bretagne , and at the Glénans base in Marseillan (Mediterranean coast) he passed the Brevet d'État , a professional training course for sailing instructors and the organization of Sailing schools.

1994–2006: racing career

If Cammas said he had hardly ever sailed regattas before, that changed when he won the Espoir Crédit Agricole Challenge , which was advertised for sailors between 18 and 25 years of age, in 1994 : the aim of the regatta is to select a young sailor who will spend the next two years on a monohull -Regatta boat of the type Figaro Bénéteau II takes part in single-handed high seas regattas as part of the Championnat de France de Course au Large en Solitaire ( e.g. French single-handed high seas regatta championship) and in the Breton port of Port-la-Fôret (near La Forêt-Fouesnant ) a Receives training from the well-known regatta sailors who train there. Cammas moved to Brittany, where he has lived since then (as of 2009). In 1997, the only 24-year-old won the prestigious one-hand regatta Solitaire du Figaro .

The fastest sailing boats, however, are not monohulls like the Figaro Bénéteau II , but multihulls , especially trimarans . With its newly won sponsor Groupama , an insurance and banking company, Cammas was able to sail its own trimaran from 1998, the Groupama . In the following years, Cammas won top places as skipper on her and her successor Groupama 2 in various important high seas regattas, including the transatlantic regattas Transat Québec – Saint-Malo (2000) and Transat Jacques Vabre (2001, 2003, 2007). From 2000 to 2007 he won the ORMA World Championship for 60- foot multihull boats six times .

Since 2007: regatta and record sailing

In addition to the important offshore regattas, Cammas is increasingly turning to the speed records, which he is attacking above all with the Groupama 3 maxi trimaran launched at the end of 2004 . In 2007 he improved the record for the sailed route in 24 hours (see Etmal ) and for the North Atlantic crossing ( New York - Lizard Point ), and in 2009 for the Mediterranean crossing Marseille - Carthage . After two unsuccessful attempts due to material damage, in March 2010 he won the Jules Verne trophy for the fastest circumnavigation of the world - with a time of less than 50 days.

Cammas also continues to take part in regattas. He also expanded his choice of boats: in spring 2009, his 40-foot catamaran Groupama 40 was launched. And when the one-handed regatta Route du Rhum was opened to boats of unlimited size in 2010, he even registered with the Groupama 3 . The maxi trimaran, which was actually designed for a crew of ten, was set up as a single-handed boat, among other things by using a shorter mast (33.5 instead of the usual 41 meters) and reducing the sail area in order to reduce the sailing pressure, as well as by setting up a bicycle-like one Construction in order to be able to tame the enormous forces of the large sails not only with arm muscles, but alternately with leg muscles. The effort was worth it - Cammas won the regatta and at the same time set a new regatta course record with the huge boat. At the end of the year, Radio France listeners voted Cammas “Sportsman of the Year”.

For the next few years, Cammas is particularly planning to take part in the next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12. Since the regatta is held on monohulls, the Groupama team has bought the previous winner's boat, the Ericsson 4 (now Groupama 70 ) and is currently building its own 70-foot boat ( Groupama 4 is planned to be launched in March 2011).

Cammas, a Breton by choice, owns a house between Quimper and Lorient and has two daughters (born around 2003 and 2004), whose mother he has since separated (as of 2006). In his spare time, Cammas has become enthusiastic about swimming, skiing and mountaineering in addition to music.
