The Francoaceae are a family of plants from the order of the cranesbill-like (Geraniales). The family includes only two species in two monotypical genera that are native to Chile .

description

The two species are clearly different in many morphological characteristics.

Vegetative characteristics

They are perennial herbaceous plants . Rhizomes are formed. The above-ground parts of the plant are glandular or woolly hairy. The alternate, more or less in basal rosettes grouped together leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The leaf blade is simple and circular or divided. Stipules are missing.

Generative characteristics

Terminal, racemose or panicle inflorescences are formed. There are bracts available.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry or strongly zygomorphic with double perianth . The four to five sepals are only briefly fused. There are two or four or rarely five free petals that can be nailed. There are two circles with four or eight free stamens each, those of a circle are transformed into staminodes . The pollen grains have three apertures and are colporat. The two or four (or five?) Carpels are an above-permanent, two or vierkammerigen ovary overgrown. Each ovary chamber contains 20 to 50 anatropic, bitegmic, crassinucellate ovules .

An upright (septicidal or valvular) capsule fruit is formed that contains many seeds. The very small seeds contain endosperm and a tiny embryo.

The base chromosome number is n = 26.

Systematics

The Francoaceae family was listed in 1832 by Adrien Henri Laurent de Jussieu in Annales des Sciences Naturelles (Paris) , 25, p. 9. Type genus is Francoa Cav.

There are only two monotypical genera in the Francoaceae family :

  • Francoa Cav. : With the single species (sometimes two or three species are given):
    • Francoa sonchifolia ( Willd. ) Cav. (Syn .: Panke sonchifolia Willd. ): It is rich in shapes and thrives in the mountains of central Chile. It is called goose thistle leaved Francoa or bridal wreath and is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
  • Tetilla DC. : With the only kind:

swell
