François Joseph Bosio (born March 19, 1768 in Monaco , † July 29, 1845 in Paris ) was a French sculptor and draftsman. His work can be assigned to classicism .

Life

Bosio was a student of the Paris-based sculptor Augustin Pajou , who first worked for churches in Italy in the 1790s. Pajou promoted Bosio and achieved that Napoleon entrusted him with the work on the Colonne Vendôme on the Place Vendôme . With the proceeds of this work, Bosio later made a study tour to and through Italy, on which he studied the works of the ancient masters.

Not only Napoleon - who distinguished him several times and employed him as court painter for his family - was able to convince Bosio; also Louis XVIII. who appointed him court sculptor and made him Knight of the Order of Saint-Michel in 1821. Under Charles X , Bosio was made a baron .

In 1816 he received a professorship at the Paris Art School.

Bosio reached the peak of his career when he was appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.

He was buried in the famous Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris .

reception

Although Bosio found his own style early on, his works are somewhat reminiscent of those of Antonio Canova . With his figures, Bosio brought the classic and modern styles together in a pleasant manner. The harmony of the movement he portrays always underlines the drama of what is happening.
