Franjo Ksaver Kuhač (born November 20, 1834 in Osijek , † June 18, 1911 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian music teacher , music historian and folk musicologist.

Life

Kuhač was born into a German family as Franz Xaver Koch . After school education in Essegg, as the city of Osijek was called at the beginning of the 19th century, Koch studied pedagogy in Donji Miholjac in 1848 , but at the same time began to occupy himself intensively with Croatian music. Therefore, after completing his teaching diploma, he immediately started studying musicology in Budapest . In order to expand his knowledge in this regard, he went to Leipzig , Weimar and Vienna , where Franz Liszt taught him to play the piano. After returning to his hometown, Koch worked as a piano teacher and choir director until 1871 , which also made him familiar with the compositions of Slavic musicians. Finally, he traveled for twelve years in Croatia and the neighboring countries in order to intensively collect the folk songs. As a result, the Magnum opus collection ( Južnoslavenske narodne popjevke ) was created in 1878–1881 , around 5000 South Slavic folk songs with piano accompaniment. Koch, who now called himself Kuhač, created his own Croatian musical terminology for the scientific development of the national cultural heritage. He also discovered significant similarities between Croatian folk songs and works by Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven , which earned him great respect in the scientific world. Kuhač composed himself, but concentrated on short piano and vocal works. Matko Brajša (1859–1934) from Istria supported him in collecting Croatian folk tunes .

In his native town, a small town square in the upper town was named after him and is decorated with a bust of the musician. The music school in the Osijek fortress Tvrđa is called "Franjo Kuhač".
