Frank-Ulrich Vögely (born June 1, 1949 in Karlsruhe ; † February 12, 2011 in Mannheim ) was a German composer , writer and art historian .

Life

Frank-Ulrich Vögely, son of the head of the school administration, Ludwig Vögely , studied art history , political science and musicology in Heidelberg and Florence , as well as composition theory and pianistics in Karlsruhe . Numerous activities, some of which were prosecuted under criminal law, as a member and protagonist of the Heidelberg student movement since 1967 and the peace movement of the late 1970s and following years found their counterpart in his socially critical artistic work.

As a composer, Vögely is part of New Music. His early work is determined by the methods of serial music and the teachers Luigi Nono , Pierre Boulez and John Cage ( Darmstadt Summer Courses ). After further studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen , Vögely turned to electronic music. His later works are characterized by process compositions, musique concrète , soundscape and polyrhythmic tonality.

As a pianist and harpsichordist, Vögely recorded works of modern and new music.

In 1982 Vögely founded the “Musicteam Mannheim”, an association of renowned musicians (including Lindy Huppertsberg , Rainer Pusch , Johannes Schaedlich ) to develop progressive teaching didactics.

Vögely's writing activity includes art and musicological specialist literature and publications in the field of poetry and prose . He was particularly interested in the history of photography , the origins of which were based on friendships with the pioneers of contemporary photography Brassaï , Bill Brandt and Robert Häusser . A 25-volume “Encyclopédie sentimentale”, which is the successor to Diderot, is to be regarded as his life's work; the publication of the first three volumes was planned for 2011.

Since 1975 he has regularly held workshops and concerts (with Gerry Mulligan , Miles Davis , Archie Shepp , Dexter Gordon, among others ) at his residence, the “Feudenheimer Kulturscheune” in Mannheim, and since 1985 the “Mannheimer Künstlertafel”. In 2004 he founded the “Collectif des artistes” to promote international artist exchanges.
