Frank Becker (historian)

Frank Becker (born October 5, 1963 in Bottrop ) is a German historian . He taught at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and has been Professor of Modern and Contemporary History with a focus on Western Europe at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2011 .

Life

Becker studied history, German, philosophy and education. After the first state examination for the higher teaching post (1989) he was in 1992 with Hans-Ulrich Thamer at the Philosophical Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster with the dissertation Americanism in Weimar. Sports symbols and political culture 1918-1933 to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1998 he completed his habilitation with the work Images of War and the Nation. The wars of unification in the middle-class public in Germany 1864-1913 , for which he was awarded in 2000 and 2002.

In 2003 he was visiting lecturer at the German Historical Institute in London and in 2004 at the University of Växjö . In 2004 he represented the professorship for modern and contemporary history with special attention to the history of international relations in the 19th and 20th centuries at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, where he was appointed adjunct professor in 2005. From 2005 to 2006 he took over the professorship for modern history with special emphasis on the 19th century at the University of Trier . This was followed by a visiting professorship for media history of the war at the University of Vienna (2006), a visiting professor at the University of Växjö (2006), a substitute professor for modern history at the University of Vechta (2007) and a substitute professor for modern and contemporary history at the Justus- Liebig University Giessen (2007/08). From 2008 he was a representative of the Chair for Modern and Contemporary History at the Department of History at the University of Münster. In 2011 he became Professor of Modern and Contemporary History with a focus on Western Europe at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Becker researches a. a. on Americanism , nationalism , racial politics and the history of sport . For example, from 1999 to 2004 he was funded by the German Research Foundation on "Ideas as a social creative force in modern Europe - approaches to a new 'intellectual history'". From 2005 to 2007 he was a scholarship holder of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation . He is the author of several books and has published in magazines such as Stadion , Military History Journal , Archive for Cultural History , KultuRevolution and Historical Journal .

  • 2000: Werner Hahlweg Prize for Military History and Defense Sciences (2nd prize) for the habilitation thesis
