Frank Müller-Römer

Frank Müller-Römer (born March 24, 1936 in Hainsberg near Dresden) is a German communications engineer, media expert and Egyptologist .

Life

Frank Müller-Römer attended the humanistic branch of the Pforta State School from 1948 to 1952 , passed his Abitur at the Kreuzschule Dresden in 1954 and then studied communications engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart (graduation as Dipl.-Ing.). He began his professional career in 1962 at Siemens in Stuttgart . In 1965 he was appointed head of the engineering office in Reutlingen; In 1970 he took over the communications engineering sales management in the Munich branch of Siemens AG.

From 1975 to 1994 Frank Müller-Römer was Technical Director of Bayerischer Rundfunk and a member of the management. In this role and as long-time chairman of the ARD / ZDF technical commission, he campaigned for the further development of radio, television and information technology. Videotext ( Teletext ), Radio Data System (RDS), Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and the integrated service broadband network (fiber optic technology) of ARD ( HYBNET ) were significantly promoted by him as the chairman of the corresponding working groups and bear his signature. On behalf of the Free State of Bavaria, he took part in a total of six international radio administration conferences of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva as the representative of the federal states . In 1989/90 he was the representative of the Free State of Saxony for the preparations for the establishment of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk . In numerous lectures, specialist publications and television reports, he took a position on this and other developments in radio technology.

From 1991 to 1998 Frank Müller-Römer was chairman of DAB Platform eV, the aim of which was to promote the introduction of Digial Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in the Federal Republic of Germany. 26 members (public broadcasters, private program organizers, research institutes, industrial companies) worked in the DAB Platform eV on issues relating to the development of DAB and its introduction.

From 1986 to 1996 Frank Müller-Römer held a teaching position at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin), department of communication studies. From 1996 to 2002 he taught - since 1997 as honorary professor for media technology - at the University of Applied Sciences in Mittweida (FH). He also taught at the Bavarian Academy for Television (BAF) from 1996 to 2007.

In 1997 Frank Müller-Römer received his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Dresden . ("For wireless terrestrial transmission of narrow and broadband data streams to mobile operated receivers"). He then studied Egyptology at the Institute for Egyptology and Coptology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the minor subjects Coptology and Near Eastern Archeology and completed his studies in 2008 with a doctorate (Dr. phil.) With a thesis on building pyramids in ancient Egypt . In various lectures, television programs and specialist publications, he presented his theses on the building of the pyramids to a broader public at home and abroad.

In the winter semesters 2016/17 and 2018/19 Frank Müller-Römer gave lectures on the subject of “Construction and Transport Technologies in Ancient Egypt” and individual lectures as part of the Senior Studies Center at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

From 2003 to 2015 he was chairman of the board of directors of the Collegium Aegyptium - support group of the Institute for Egyptology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München eV

honors and awards

Frank Müller-Römer's services to the development of radio and media technology have received several awards. In 1983 Hörzu magazine awarded him the Golden Satellite Prize, which was only awarded this year, as part of the award ceremony for the Golden Camera . In 1991 the Television and Cinema Technology Society made him an honorary member. In 1991 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1994 with the Bavarian Order of Merit.
