Frank Lyon Polk (* 13. September 1871 in Manhattan , New York City ; † 7. February 1943 in New York City) was an American lawyer , who from 1919 to 1920 as the United States Under Secretary of State Deputy Secretary of State was. Life

Polk was a son of the doctor William Mecklenburg Polk and grandson of the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the USA and general of the Confederate States Army (CSA) in the Civil War , Leonidas Polk . His other ancestors included his great-uncle Lucius Junius Polk, a cotton plantation owner and member of the Tennessee Senate , his great-grandcousin and US President James K. Polk , his great - cousin Lucius E. Polk , who also served as a general in the Confederate States Army, and his Cousin Rufus King Polk , who was a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania between 1899 and 1902 .

After attending school, Frank Polk himself began an undergraduate degree at Yale College , which he completed in 1894 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). There he joined the Scroll and Key secret society . A subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Law School of Columbia University , he finished in 1897 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then took up a position as a lawyer in New York City in the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell . In addition, he was involved in various committees and commissions of the city for the Democratic Party, for example from 1907 to 1909 as a member of the commission for the civil service and between 1907 and 1910 as a member of the education committee. Polk then resumed his practice as an attorney and partner with the New York law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell . In 1923 he dissolved Henry Matson Waite as President of the National Municipal League and held this post until his replacement by Richard S. Childs in 1927. He was also manager of his law firm partner John W. Davis when he ran for the Democratic National Convention in 1924, on this was nominated as the Democratic Party candidate for the 1924 presidential election.
