In addition to his missionary preaching work at major evangelistic events, he is president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the Christian aid organization Samaritan's Purse . Franklin Graham is the son of the internationally known revival preacher Billy Graham .

Life

Franklin Graham was born the fourth of five children to Billy and Ruth Graham near Asheville , North Carolina . He attended a private Christian school. After graduating, he enrolled at LeTourneau College in Longview , Texas in 1971 . The next station of his education were the Montreat College and the Appalachian State University , which he left with a Bachelor of Arts .

In 1974, on a trip to Jerusalem , the 22-year-old Graham had a special conversion experience through which he became a professed Christian and which had a decisive influence on his further life. In 1975 he married Jane Austin Cunningham and entered the service of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association initiated by his father , an evangelical mission organization that is now active worldwide. His early years in this organization were accompanied by Pastors Roy Gustafson and John Wesley White. From 1989 Graham was entrusted with the planning and implementation of large evangelistic events. In 2002 he was promoted to President of the BGEA . Since 1989 he has preached to more than 3,000,000 people at major events (as of February 2010). Franklin Graham offered the prayer of blessing at the inauguration of Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump . Franklin Graham is also President of Samaritan's Purse , a Christian-oriented aid organization that Robert Pierce founded on the model of the World Vision organization, which he also created .

The Graham couple have four children: Will Graham (* 1975), who also works as an evangelist; Roy Austin Graham (* 1977), Edward Bell Graham (* 1979), Jane Austin Graham (* 1986). Graham currently resides in Boone, North Carolina with his wife Jane.

Controversial comments and criticism

Graham caught in the crossfire of criticism, when, after the attacks of 11 September 2001 the Islam described as "evil, and devilish."

In 2003, Graham advocated the US war against Iraq. In a sermon at the Pentagon , he said that Islam cannot be practiced in the United States.

On August 19, 2010, he said in an interview that he sees it as a problem that President Barack Obama is the son of a Muslim. The seeds of Islam passed on to him through his father.

In September 2010, Graham claimed that the building of synagogues and churches was banned in all Islamic countries.

About Hinduism he said: “no elephant with 100 arms can do anything for me. None of their 9000 gods is going to lead me to salvation ”( no elephant with 100 arms can do anything for me. None of their 9000 gods will lead me to salvation ).

In April 2015, his house bank Wells Fargo , headquartered in California, published a television advertisement in which two women learn sign language using videophones and end up adopting a deaf girl together. This angered him so that he announced on Facebook and on the radio of the Family Research Council that he would switch accounts of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to the BB&T, which is headquartered in North Carolina. He also called for companies like Starbucks , Tiffany & Co. and Nike to be boycotted because they “promote a homosexual lifestyle”. The new bank scores 80% in the Corporate Equality Index of the Human Rights Campaign , sponsors the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade , is the main sponsor of the local Legacy Couples program, which has honored same-sex couples for at least 10 years, and has in its Miami branch even built a special chapel to allow same-sex couples to marry there. Graham sees no inconsistency in this, because all companies and people should be gay-friendly , but there is a difference between being friendly and being a public advocate.
