Samaritan's Purse is an evangelical , interdenominational -christliche relief organization with headquarters in Boone (North Carolina) , United States . It wants to help people in need around the world and thereby contribute to the spread of the Christian faith . The organization specializes in emergency aid , reconstruction aid , medical aid and evangelism . It also places an emphasis on education and training programs for children. President of the organization has been Franklin Graham , the son of the well-known revival preacher Billy Graham (1918-2018) , since 1979 .

history

Samaritan's Purse was founded in 1970 by Robert "Bob" Willard Pierce (1914–1978), who founded World Vision in 1950 . Following the example of the Good Samaritan ( Lk 10.25-37  EU ) people in need and despair should be helped. In 1973 Pierce and Franklin Graham got to know each other and in the following period traveled to a large number of distressed regions around the world. In 1977, World Medical Mission , a short-term medical aid program, was established as the scope of Samaritan's Purse. In 1979, a year after Pierce's death, Graham became President and Chairman of the Board of Samaritan's Purse.

The organization has grown since the 1970s. The Canadian arm has existed since 1973. In the 1980s, Samaritan's Purse organized aid missions in Kenya , Honduras and Bangladesh, among others . The UK section of Samaritan's Purse has been operating since 1990. The Australian - New Zealand section has been operating since 1995.

In 1993, the organization joined Operation Chrismas Child , a Christmas gift campaign launched in 1990 by a Welsh businessman. Germany was added in 1996. Since then, the annual collection of parcels has been taking place under the name of Christmas in a shoe box in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Liechtenstein and South Tyrol . From November 2001 the German partner in this campaign was called Gifts of Hope . It emerged from the German branch of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association . Since January 2019 the German partner is called Samaritan's Purse eV - Die Barmherzigen Samariter eV and is thus officially part of the international network of Samaritan's Purse. Nothing changes in the status of a legally independent association in Germany.

In 2017, Samaritan's Purse was ranked 22nd in Forbes' list of the 100 largest American charities.

Main activities and relief operations

May 2015: An employee from Samaritan's Purse is waiting to be transported to an earthquake region in Nepal .

Samaritan's Purse divides its activities into so-called Ministry Projects (works in the sense of charity and mercy ); in summer 2018 there were 18 projects, including:

  • US Disaster Relief , International Crisis Response, and Crisis & Disaster Response Provide
personnel, volunteers, and equipment to respond to crises and disasters in the United States and around the world.
  • World Medical Mission
Since 1977 medical personnel have been supported to provide medical emergency aid in short-term
missions on a voluntary basis. Medical emergency equipment is also kept ready here.
  • Operation Christmas Child (German: Christmas in a shoebox )
Since 1993, this organization has organized the collection and distribution of Christmas presents every year; According to its own information, more than 157 million children in over 160 countries have been reached since then (as of August 2018).
  • Children's Heart Project
Children from regions without adequate medical infrastructure have been treated in professionally suitable hospitals since 1997. Often times abroad are arranged for these interventions.
  • The Greatest Journey (dt .: The biggest travel )
This belief courses that are aimed at children, have existed since 2009. They are a follow-up offer for Operation Christmas Child ( Operation Christmas Child ).
  • Operation Heal Our Patriots
The project has been aimed at active or former members of the American armed forces and their wives since 2012 . Samaritan's Purse supports both the medical care of war injuries from US military operations as well as the social reintegration of former military members in their home country and help for their marriages.

In the course of medical and disaster relief, operations are carried out worldwide. Samaritan's Purse was active among other things

Cooperations

Samaritan's Purse regularly works with United Nations organizations. These include the United Nations World Food Program , the World Health Organization , and the UNHCR .

Samaritan's Purse also works regularly with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Locations, reach and evaluation

The organization is based in Boone, North Carolina. The aid organization also has international offices in Canada , the United Kingdom , Australia and Germany. According to its own information, Samaritan's Purse carries out medical missions and disaster relief in more than a hundred countries.

The Charity Navigator has given the organization four out of four stars since 2000, with one exception: three out of four stars were awarded in 2009. When compared to other charities operating in similar fields, Samaritan's Purse received the highest ratings for 2016.

Controversy

Franklin Graham called Islam "evil and diabolical" in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. For this he was heavily attacked. His statements about the LGBTI movement also led to public opposition. In addition to his work for Samaritan's Purse, Graham followed his father as chairman of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 2000 and took over his father's ministry as an evangelist and preacher , which he has performed since then. In 2009 he came under fire for receiving remuneration for his work from both organizations.

The presence of Samaritan's Purse in Iraq since the end of the Iraq war aroused opposition in 2003, but later also thanks from the Iraqi officials.

A connection between aid and Christian mission was criticized at Operation Chrismas Child / Christmas in a shoebox . Samaritan's Purse operates in a “decidedly missionary context”, according to the Evangelical Central Office for Weltanschauung questions in 2003 . Other evangelical voices like Michael Diener , member of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), support the action. There are also negative and supportive voices in the Catholic Church. In this context, Gifts of Hope emphasizes respect for religious and cultural contexts in recipient countries; the professionalism and unreservedness of the distribution of Christmas presents will be checked. The sustainability is in the eyes of experts for development cooperation should be viewed critically. Samaritan's Purse responded by pointing out that the gift campaign should be understood as a sign of appreciation for children, not as development aid. The organization also welcomes the public discussion about social and environmental standards in the production of goods and articles for giving.

Others

According to Franklin Graham, Samaritan's Purse was one of the victims of the IRS scandal in 2013 : in particular, critics of Barack Obama's policies received visits from the US tax authorities; in the wake of the scandal, Steven Miller, deputy director of the tax authority, resigned.

The organization received international attention in 2014 when Kent Brantly, a doctor from the World Medical Mission , contracted the Ebola virus while working in Liberia . He was the first American to receive successful treatment in his home country. In 2015 he was invited by Barack Obama to the National Prayer Breakfast and recognized. In 2017 a film about him ( Facing Darkness ) was released in American cinemas.

In 2017, eight employees in South Sudan were kidnapped, but released again after a short time.
