Frantz Reichel
François-Étienne Obus "Frantz" Reichel (born March 16, 1871 in Paris ; † March 24, 1932 ibid) was a French athlete who appeared in various sports, but mainly as a rugby union player and athlete . He also worked as a sports reporter and as a functionary for various associations.
biography
Reichel attended the Lycée Lakanal in Sceaux . He later worked full-time as a journalist for Le Figaro (he was the founder of the sports department there), Le Vélo and Le Sport illustré . From 1890 to 1893 he won four French championship titles in athletics. As Special Rapporteur for Le Vélo, he was sent to Athens in 1896 to take part in the first modern Olympic Games . In the 400-meter run , he was eliminated as third in the preliminary run. He would have been eligible to start in the final of the 110-meter hurdles , but he did not compete and instead supported his compatriot Albin Lermusiaux in the marathon.
Reichel was also successful as a rugby player. In 1892 and 1900 he became French champions with the Racing Club de France . At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 , he won the gold medal. He then played until 1906 for the Sporting Club Universitaire de France , whose rugby department he had co-founded the year before.
Reichel was the first European journalist to fly on an airplane. On October 3, 1908, he and his pilot Wilbur Wright set a new world record in endurance flying near Le Mans .
In 1901 Reichel was a co-founder of the French National Olympic Committee, in 1903 founder of the French boxing federation, the billiards federation Fédération des Sociétés Françaises des Amateurs de Billard and Fédération Française de Billard (FFB) and in 1924 founder of the French baseball and softball federation. In 1924 he also founded the French Association of Sports Journalists and was Secretary General of the USFSA Sports Association .
At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, Reichel was a member of the organizing committee as press chief. From 1924 to 1932 Reichel was president of the international sports journalists' association AIPS . The Coupe Frantz Reichel , the French rugby union championship of the U21 juniors , is named after him .
