Franz Ambrosius Reuss
Franz Ambrosius Reuss (also: Franz Ambrosius Reuss ; born October 3, 1761 in Prague ; † September 9, 1830 in Bilin ) was a Bohemian doctor, mineralogist and geologist.
Live and act
Reuss initially devoted himself to studying medicine in Prague and graduated in 1782 when he received his doctorate . However, since he was increasingly interested in the research areas of mineralogy and geognosy (today: geology ) during his medical studies , he also attended lectures by Abraham Gottlob Werner (1750-1817) in Freiberg.
After his appointment as a spa doctor in Bad Biliner Sauerbrunn von Bílina in north-west Bohemia by Franz Josef Maximilian Prince Lobkowitz, he primarily researched the mineral deposits in this area and examined their geographical distribution, as he saw the mineral associations as witnesses to the history of their origin.
Reuss wrote numerous papers on the composition, geology and use of the minerals from Bílina , Františkovy Lázně ( Franzensbad ), Saidschitz - Sedlitz, Lázně Libverda ( Liebwerda ), Teplice ( Teplitz ) and others. For this and his remarks on the mining aspects of the mineral deposits, he was honored in 1808 with the appointment to the imperial mountain ridge.
In addition to his research on mineral associations in Bohemia, Reuss also dealt with the history of medicine and the use of medicinal waters. In the course of this he described, among other things, the discovery of a "solid" (natural) Glauber's salt , which later received the official mineral name Mirabilit .
Franz Ambrosius Reuss was married to Katharina (née Schedlhauer). Their daughter Karoline was the mother of Carl Ferdinand Peters (1825–1881). His systematic mineral collection, built up since 1780, was continued by his son August Emanuel (1811–1873) and taken over by Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz (1772–1816).
In 1800 Reuss was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
