August Emanuel von Reuss
August Emanuel Rudolf von Reuss (born July 8, 1811 in Bilin , Bohemia , † November 26, 1873 in Vienna ) was an Austrian physician, geologist and paleontologist.
Life
August Emanuel Reuss was born as the son of the Bilinian physician Franz Ambrosius Reuss (1761-1830). His father used the mineral water in the health resort of Bilin for his professional practice.
After completing his high school education, he studied philosophy from 1825 and medicine from 1827. At the age of 22 he received his doctorate on November 10, 1833 as an assistant at the ophthalmic clinic . From the following year he practiced for 15 years in Bilin as a mansion and well doctor and city physician . In 1849 he was appointed full public professor of mineralogy at the Prague University and from 1863 at the University of Vienna to the same professorship as successor to Franz Xaver Zippe .
During his time in Bilin, Reuss dealt as a young doctor with mineralogical, geological and paleontological studies in the vicinity of his hometown. He received the formative suggestions from his father and later teacher Franz Xaver Zippe.
His son was the ophthalmologist August Leopold von Reuss (1841-1924).
His numerous works are of great importance for the early geoscientific knowledge of Bohemia.
He was also particularly concerned with foraminifera , but also corals , bryozoa , ostracods , crabs and other fossils. He created a pioneering system of foraminifera taking into account the structure of the skeletal wall, its building material and pore systems.
