Franz Biese , completely Franz Carl Biese (born May 11, 1803 in Friedland (Mecklenburg) , † April 19, 1895 in Putbus ) was a German classical philologist, educator and senior teacher at the Putbus pedagogy for many years . He was a recognized Aristotle researcher of his time.

Life

Franz Biese was the son of Erdmann Biese (1761-1840), town musician and organist at the Marienkirche in Friedland, and Maria Dorothea Petersen. He studied philology and philosophy at the universities in Berlin and Halle . In 1829 he became a teacher at the Joachimsthal School . In 1835 he published the first volume of the "Philosophy of Aristotle", with which he found great recognition beyond the specialist circles of philologists and philosophers. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. appointed him professor.

In April 1836 he was appointed by the school authorities to Putbus on Rügen , where he helped set up a grammar school together with Ferdinand Hasenbalg . On October 7, 1836, he began his official teaching as the first senior teacher at the Putbus grammar school. A few years later he resumed his work on the "Philosophy of Aristotle" and in 1842 published the second volume. With this he again found recognition among both philosophers and natural scientists. Alexander von Humboldt sent him a splendid edition of his " Kosmos ". Biese had come into closer personal acquaintance with Humboldt, who had repeatedly visited Putbus in the entourage of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV . The University of Greifswald awarded him an honorary doctorate.

In the following years he wrote textbooks and successfully taught Greek and German. In autumn 1878 he retired after teaching for 42 years.

In 1895 he died of pneumonia.

Franz Biese was married to Luise Schwing (1816–1881), a daughter of Christian Schwing, tenant of Darsband, and Louisa Christina Kriebel. The two had three daughters and three sons, including the later literary historian Alfred Biese (1856–1930).
