Franz Brüninghaus

Franz Willi Brüninghaus (born January 22, 1870 in Berlin ; † October 11, 1951 in Förderstedt ) was a German naval officer , civil servant in the Reichsmarineamt, head of administration at Kiautschou during the German Empire and a member of the Reichstag for the DVP in the Weimar Republic .

Life

Brüninghaus joined the Imperial Navy on April 13, 1888 . From 1896 he served as a flag lieutenant with the staff of the 1st Squadron. In 1898 and 1899 he attended the Naval Academy. He commanded various ships a. a. 1904 and 1905 the SMS Loreley in Constantinople . Then Brüninghaus moved to the Reichsmarineamt , where he was responsible for organizational, personnel and budget issues.

Between 1908 and 1912 Brüninghaus was the head of the civil administration of the Kiautschou lease area . He was involved in founding the German-Chinese university. In the meantime he was also in command of the liner SMS Wörth . He then commanded the armored cruiser SMS Gneisenau in the Far East from 1912 to 1914 .

In 1916, Brüninghaus took part in the Battle of the Skagerrak as commander of the large liner SMS König . There he suffered gas poisoning and returned to the Reichsmarineamt as director of the budget department. Between 1916 and 1918 Brüninghaus was the representative of the Reich Naval Office at the Federal Council. On July 2, 1919, he was retired from military service and given the character of Rear Admiral.

In the years 1921 and 1922 he was Reich representative of the foreign trade office for export trade. He also worked in the tobacco industry from 1921.

For the DVP, Brüninghaus was a member of the Reichstag from 1920 to 1932 .
