Franz Dafert from Sensel-Timmer

Franz Wilhelm Dafert von Sensel-Timmer (born June 20, 1863 in Vienna , † October 17, 1933 in Vienna) was an Austrian agricultural expert and food chemist .

Life

Dafert grew up first in Krieglach , later in Vienna. His father comes from a farming family from the Weinviertel, while his mother comes from an ennobled civil servant family. In Vienna he passed the Matura in 1879 . He then studied chemistry and became chairman of the Vienna Association of German Students. After Richard Wagner's death, he gave his condolences to Cosima Wagner :

"The German students of Vienna mourn deeply moved at the coffin of the enthusiastically revered master, the creator of German art, the German man and patriot."

With Hermann Bahr he was after he led mourning for Kommersbuch Richard Wagner from the spring 1883 University of Vienna (and all other universities in Austria) relegated . At the Hessian Ludwig University in 1883 he obtained a doctorate in chemistry and a master's degree in liberal arts. There he examined the sugar alcohol mannitol and wrote a textbook on soil science. From 1887 to 1898 he had the task of increasing the yield in agriculture in Brazil. With the help of his own research plantation , he studied coffee and sugar cane in particular . When he returned to Austria in 1898, he took on similar tasks as (the Emerich Meissl , 1855–1905, subsequent) director of the kk agricultural and chemical experimental station in Vienna (see: Taborstrasse 90–92).

Up until 1914, Dafert examined 60,000 samples a year in his test station, ranging from crop production to dairy farming to peatland culture. The station also had two branches in Korneuburg and Admont . From 1891, at his suggestion, the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus (Austrian food book) was created. The first edition was published between 1910 and 1917 and consisted of three volumes with 55 chapters. In 1919 Dafert became section head.
