List of bird species Atauros
The list of bird species Atauros provides an overview of the bird species on the island of Atauro .
In 2004, 84 bird species were recorded on the island of Atauro in the north of East Timor . 13 more were added in 2007. 67 of the 97 bird species are considered native to Atauro. The island lies between the two main islands of the Timor / Wetar region on the Wallace Line , where species from both the Asian and Australian fauna can be found. Twelve of the 17 endemic species that live on both main islands are also found on Atauro. Two other types are considered to be restricted to the region (within a radius of 50,000 km²). Most of the Atauros bird species are also found in Timor . Only a few species and subspecies are typical for the neighboring island of Wetar .
The island
Atauro has an area of 140.50 km². In 2010 there were 8,600 people on the island. It is located about 23.5 km north of the state capital Dili off the coast of Timor . To the northeast are the Indonesian islands of Wetar (21.5 km) and Liran (13 km) across the Strait of Wetar , and to the west of Alor , across the Strait of Ombai . Atauro is one of the islands of the Banda Arch , which surrounds the Banda Sea.
Atauro is of volcanic origin and was formed 3 to 3.5 million years ago. Today the island is no longer volcanically active. The island is rugged and rough. The formerly submarine volcanoes are exposed to erosion. The highest point on the island is the Mano Côco ( Foho Manococo ) with 999 m . Other elevations are the Foho Tutonairana and the Foho Berau . High cliffs that protrude into the sea and sheltered bays with sandy beaches characterize the coast. A wide reef from 30 to 150 m frames the island. The strait between Atauro and Timor is up to 3500 meters deep. In addition to the fields, there is mainly grassland with eucalyptus trees ( Eucalyptus alba ) and some remnants of dry and evergreen, tropical forests, especially on the mountains and in ravines. The trees in the tropical mountain forest at Mano Côco reach heights of 15 to 20 m. 40 km² around the mountain is a nature reserve.
