During the Second World War it was occupied by the Japanese after the Battle of Ambon (1942). After the war, the population negotiated independence with the Dutch and in 1950 proclaimed the Republic of the South Moluccas . The Indonesian army conquered the area and incorporated it into the new state. In 1998/99 and again from 2002 tensions and conflicts arose between Christians and Muslims, claiming thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of refugees.
