The Southwest Moluccas ( Maluku Barat Daya, MBD for short ) are a government district ( Kabupaten ) in the Indonesian province of Maluku .
70,372 people live in the southwestern Moluccas (2010 census).
geography
The southwest Moluccas have an area of 8,648 km². The Kabupaten consists of 48 islands of the Banda Arch , which is the eastern extension of the Lesser Sunda Islands . These include the Barat Daya Islands with Wetar , Liran , Romang and the Damar Islands , the Leti Islands with Leti , Moa and Lakor , the Sermata Islands with Sermata , the Babar Islands with Babar , Wetan and Masela and the island of Kisar .
To the north is the Banda Sea , to the south, across the Wetar Strait , the islands of Timor and the Timor Sea , to the east the Tanimbar Islands and to the west the islands of Alor and Atauro .
The capital has been Tiakur on Moa since November 26, 2012 . Before that, Wonreli on Kisar was the de facto capital of the Kabupaten founded on September 16, 2008.
The Kabupaten is divided into the Kecamatans (districts) Pulau-Pulau Wetar , Pulau-Pulau Terselatan , Leti Moa Lakor , Pulau Lakor , Pulau Moa , Damar ( Damer ), Mdona Hiera ( Mdona Hyera ), Pulau-Pulau Babar and Babar Timur ( East Babar ).
