Franz Hagens

Franz Moritz Ludwig Günter Hagens (born September 15, 1835 in Großglogau , Silesia , † September 6, 1894 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and member of the Prussian House of Representatives.

Life and work

Franz Hagens, son of an appellate court and judicial councilor, studied law together with his younger brother Carl Hagens in Bonn, Göttingen - where they joined the Hannovera fraternity - and Berlin after graduating from high school in Paderborn . After completing the usual legal training with first and second state exams, he worked for five years as a court assessor in the district of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce. In 1866 he became a district judge in Graudenz ; 1869 City and District Judge in Gdansk. He was transferred to the Berlin City Court in 1873.

Two years later he was entrusted with an extraordinary judicial activity: he was seconded to the newly established International Courts of Justice in Cairo with effect from June 24, 1875 for the duration of his assignment. From 1876 to 1882 he was President of the Mixed Court , which dealt in particular with commercial matters in which one of the contracting parties was not Egyptian. Returned to Germany in 1882, he held the office of Senate President at the Higher Regional Court in Poznan for six years . From 1886 to 1888 he was a member of the National Liberal Party of the Prussian House of Representatives for the constituency of Breslau 7 ( Waldenburg , Reichenbach ). At his request, he was transferred to the Berlin Superior Court in 1888. Due to illness, he was granted retirement in 1893.

  • 1882: Highest approval for the creation of the Order of Osmania, 3rd class, bestowed upon him by His Highness Tawfiq of the Khedive of Egypt

  • 1893: Appointment to the Privy Higher Justice Council with the rank of Councilor 2nd Class
