Franz Hofmann

Franz Hofmann (born June 20, 1845 in Zdounek / Czech Republic ; † October 25, 1897 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer , university professor and member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences .

Life

Hofmann attended grammar school in Kremsier and began studying Roman law at the University of Vienna in 1862 , where he was supported by his teachers Carl Ludwig Arndts von Arnesberg and Joseph Unger . After receiving his doctorate in 1867, he stayed in Göttingen for some time and came into closer personal contact with the legal scholar Johann Heinrich Thöl .

Returning to Vienna , he completed his habilitation in 1868 with a treatise on Periculum est emptoris (“The risk lies with the buyer.”) For Roman law. Hofmann did not see himself as a pandectist , which is why some of the work went unnoticed. In 1869 his teaching authorization was extended to Austrian private law, as well as commercial and exchange law and in 1871 he received an extraordinary and in 1877 the full professorship for Austrian and common private law, which he filled until his death.

Hofmann had been married since 1871 and since 1885 a corresponding and from 1890 a full member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1888 he was made an honorary member of the Istituto di diritto Romano .

He died after long suffering on October 25, 1897 and was buried in Vienna's central cemetery.

In the arcades of the University of Vienna is a relief portrait of Bronze by Theodor Khuen , which was unveiled in 1903 and is reminiscent of Franz Hofmann.
